The coalition Independentcourt.org today unveiled a new television ad using footage from the confirmation hearing to highlight why Alito should not be confirmed. To view the ad, click here.
Our bottom line, at the end of the hearings: Judge Alito’s writings during his government service and his rulings in 15 years on the federal bench show that his approach to the law is a far cry from that of Sandra Day O’Connor. His record, underscored by his evasive testimony, makes it clear that putting him on the Supreme Court would put core legal protections for women at grave risk. The right to choose, as protected by Roe v. Wade, is virtually certain to be taken away. Protections against sex discrimination will be in danger. Congress’s power to protect the public welfare and effectively address issues like family leave will be up for grabs as well. Samuel Alito should not be confirmed.
